As you wander through its quaint narrow streets, you will come across beautiful old fountains, small shady squares, lovely restaurant terraces and elegant boutiques.  The beauty of its landscapes and the incredible light have inspired numerous artists, writers and painters  over the years, The most famous is without doubt Vincent Van Gogh who painted more than 150 canvases of the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence.

A beautiful walk takes you on a journey to discover Van Gogh paintings in situ : the stunning rugged mountains in and around Saint Remy, the fields of wheat and poppies, the olive and cypress trees, seemingly undisturbed more than a century after the painter was here.  Saint Rémy de Provence, culturally rich, is built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe.  The ruins of « Glanum » were founded in III BC and worked on by the Romans under Julius Caesar.  Lovers of old stone, art and pretty boutiques will adore Saint-Rémy.  The beautiful properties in and around the village and the shady terraces on the Place Jean-Jaurès are also home to the famous.  Away from the crowds on the coast, artists and celebrities alike enjoy the laid back and relaxed atmosphere of Provence in Saint Rémy.  You will in turn feel totally charmed and at home in this gorgeous village.

It would be hard to find anywhere better : the village is nestled inside the surrounding circular boulevard that was built on the remains of the ancient ramparts (village walls), secret lanes, beautifully restored typical old stone houses, hidden balconies, art galleries, stunning vineyards and wine tasting, the chocolatier, renowned confiseur, trendy restaurants… Bienvenue !

A week-end in Saint-Rémy is full of surprises.  The room where Van Gogh stayed, the small charming cloister and church – the psychiatric institution that is still in use, a walk to the Jewish cemetery, a bucolic setting under beautiful pine trees evoking a glorious Judeo-Provencal past.

Wander the village, meander through the quaint little streets and tracks that surround it and discover the splendors of baroque Provence, the rich and almost arrogant Provence of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the village, Sade and Alméran hotels with noble and powerful facades, imposing porches and typical windows, built with beautiful stone from Barbentane or Rognes.

A few kilometres further North, the castle of Lagoy is another jewel boasting a splendid plane tree-lined driveway.

INCREDIBLE CHARM

The Château de Roussan, built in 1701, is one of a kind.  Geese and swans chatter in the canal that flows through the park.  A lovely pond full of carp and surrounded by beautifully sculptured, ancient greenhouses.  This stunning Castle-Hotel is a truly magical place set in exceptional grounds.

When you visit Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, don’t miss visiting the Mas de la Pyramide, an incredible half-troglodytic estate owned by Lolo Mauron who serves delicious meals in his home made with local produce. Lolo, 82 years old, serves a hearty cuisine and tells some amazing stories. His Domain and home is one of a kind.  The huge 20 metre tall stone column is quite breathtaking.

The Alpilles is a particularly favoured region with its 300 days of sunshine a year, numerous festivals, art galleries, cultural events, gastronomic restaurants, sumptuous stone farmhouses and bastides.   St Rémy’s privileged clientele value its discretion and authenticity.  Horses and bulls, olives and vines, the Alpilles perfectly represents the French « art de vivre ».  Located between the Luberon, the Camargue and the Cévennes, the Alpilles are easy to access : Saint Rémy de Provence (15 minutes), Avignon and the TGV train station (20 minutes), 30 minutes from Aix-en-Provence and 40 minutes from Marseille international airport.
